Netanyahu: The war is not close to ending

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said Israel will expand its ground offensive in Gaza in the coming days, despite international efforts to halt the fighting.

Speaking to members of his Likud Party, Netanyahu said the war is "not close to being over".

He spoke after returning from a visit to troops fighting inside Gaza, and as Egypt issues a proposal to end the Israel-Hamas war.

"We are not stopping. We are continuing to fight and we are expanding the fight in the coming days. It will be a long battle and it is not close to being over," Mr Netanyahu said. 

The comments come after the Hamas-led Gaza health ministry said 20,674 people had been killed and 54,536 wounded in Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7.

The ministry added that 250 Palestinians were killed in the last 24 hours and 500 were wounded./ CNA
