Have you ever wondered how it was celebrated in 18th century America? VOA correspondent Saqib Ul Islam visited Mount Vernon, the home of America's first president, George Washington. At this historic site, one of the most visited in the United States, the traditions of the 1770s celebrations are preserved.

On a crisp December evening, as the sun sets behind Mount Vernon, America's first president, General George Washington, prepares to welcome holiday visitors to his home.

This mansion has been preserved to reflect 18th century Virginia. It was where the first president and first lady spent time with their family during the holidays.

"You'll meet friends dressed as they were then, character performers, describing life in 1773 and talking about what people might have been talking about during that time. And we're doing it to honor that experience leading up to the 250th anniversary of the United States United States of America".

Actors portraying the president and his family, friends and staff, recreate the stories of Christmases past. "Very special to be here in Mount Vernon and to dress like the 18th century."

Visitors can see a winter market where vendors offer goods and handmade items and gaze upon "Aladdin," a camel that Washington brought to Mount Vernon to entertain his guests.

"That's something you don't get to do very often. You can read books and descriptions of the events of the time, but you don't get to live part of it very often."

For most of the year, visitors cannot see the mansion in the evening, which usually closes before sunset. But in the holiday season there are activities in the evening.

"This is our second time here. We just enjoy the fireworks, the festive, Christmas atmosphere. Merry Christmas!"

The night ends with holiday greetings from George and Martha Washington and spectacular fireworks.

"My wish for my country is that they will always remember that they are all Americans and see themselves as part of an ongoing experiment in government by the people that can only succeed if we all consider each other as part of it. the same union."

Mount Vernon is open 365 days a year, including Christmas Day./ Voa
