Members of the European Parliament (EP) and national governments have reached an agreement to review the European Union's asylum and immigration laws.

The agreement includes five regulations outlining how the management of asylum and immigration flows will be shared between EU member states.

The rules also indicate how to treat individuals arriving at the bloc's external borders, the processing of asylum applications and the identification of those arriving, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports

The five main proposals of the Immigration and Asylum Pact are as follows:

Screening Regulation
Eurodac Regulation
Asylum Procedures Regulation
Asylum Immigration Management Regulation
Crisis and Force Majeure Regulation

She further emphasized that the delivery of this package before the end of 2023 is a great success for the constructive pro-European center.

A key aspect of the new regulation is mandatory solidarity for EU member states experiencing migrant pressure.

The regulation will give member states the option to either resettle asylum seekers on their territory or make financial contributions to the countries that receive them.

Furthermore, the regulation defines the criteria according to which an EU member state becomes responsible for examining applications for international protection, replacing the existing Dublin rules.

The rules also cover cases of migrants being instrumentalized by third countries in an attempt to destabilize the EU.

In addition to the above, according to the screening regulation, those who do not meet EU entry rules will be subject to a pre-entry screening procedure of up to seven days. The procedure includes identification, biometric data collection and health and safety checks, with a focus on taking into account the needs of children.

Each EU member state will have a monitoring system to protect fundamental rights.

Furthermore, the Asylum Procedures Regulation establishes a common EU-wide procedure for granting and withdrawing international protection, simplifying the process to ensure faster decisions.

The agreement must now be formally approved in order for it to become law./ CNA
