Mikhail Gorbachev, the former Soviet leader whose reforms led to the breakup of the Soviet Union and the fall of communism across Central and Eastern Europe, has died at the age of 91.

Gorbachev, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990, has lost his battle with a serious illness.

International media reports that the news has been confirmed by officials of the hospital where Gorbachev was hospitalized in Moscow.

Mikhail Gorbachev was one of the most influential political figures of the 20th century. He was the first and last president of the Soviet Union. Gorbachev became general secretary of the Communist Party in 1985, aged just 53.

He presided over the dissolution of a Soviet Union that had existed for almost 70 years and had dominated large areas of Asia and Eastern Europe.

However, when he set out his reform program in 1985, his sole aim had been to revive his country's stagnant economy and overhaul its political processes.

His efforts became the catalyst for a series of events that put an end to communist rule, not only within the USSR, but also in all its former states./ BA - CNA.al
