Navalny has been placed in solitary confinement again

Imprisoned Russian dissident Alexei Navalny has been placed in solitary confinement, a day after his allies said authorities have revoked his right to write material, the only way he communicates with the outside world.

A post on Navalny's X account - formerly known as Twitter - said the Kremlin critic will spend 12 days in solitary confinement after a prison official sentenced him to a misdemeanor. However, it is still not clear what the violation is.

"I have returned to the punishment cell for 12 days. The basis of all this is a report by a prison officer, in which he wrote 'while I asked Navalny to leave the cell to get a mattress, he humiliated and insulted me,'" Navalny's post reads.

Navalny's spokeswoman, Kira Yarmysh, said it was the 21st time the Russian dissident has been placed in solitary confinement since he was sent to IK-6 prison, 250 kilometers east of Moscow, in August 2022.

Navalny, one of the most vocal critics of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was sentenced to 19 years in prison earlier this year and sent to a notorious Russian prison. He was found guilty of creating a terrorist organization.

Earlier this month, three of his associates were arrested, as his team warned that Russian authorities want to further restrict Navalny's communication with the outside world.

The charges against Navalny are widely seen as retaliation for his efforts to expose what he describes as lawlessness, corruption and repression by Putin and his political system.

He was previously imprisoned and has been in prison since 2021, when he was arrested after returning from Germany, where he was treated for poisoning, for which he blamed the Kremlin./ REL
