Spain: Socialists and leftists reach agreement on government coalition
The acting Prime Minister of Spain and the leader of the Socialist Party, Pedro Sanchez.

The Socialist Party of Spain and the far-left party, Sumar, said on Tuesday that they have reached an agreement on the formation of a new Government, an important step for the re-election of the incumbent Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, for another term.

Spain faces a prolonged political stalemate after July's general election, which the conservative People's Party (PP) won, but without enough support to form a government.

Last month, PP leader Alberto Nunez Feijoo lost a crucial parliamentary vote to be elected prime minister.

Sanchez, whose side finished second, has his chance now.

Sumari's support is crucial, but not enough to ensure that he will pass the vote of confidence in the lower house of Parliament.

Sanchez still needs support from smaller regional parties, including the hardline Catalan separatists, JxCat.

The agreement reached between the socialists and Sumer included the request to reduce working hours without reducing wages and a plan against youth unemployment.

"This agreement for the government for a four-year legislative mandate will enable our country to continue sustainable growth, as well as quality employment and policy development based on social and climate justice," said these two parties.

Sanchez, who took power in 2018, and Sumer's boss, acting Labor Minister Yolanda Diaz, will formally ratify the deal today during the day in Madrid.

No date has been set for when Sanchez will face a vote of confidence in Parliament.

If no candidate for prime minister secures a majority by November 27, then the election will be repeated in January.

In return for crucial support, JxCar is seeking amnesty for hundreds of politicians and activists who face legal action for their role in Catalonia's failed bid to secede from Spain in 2017.

This request has angered right-wingers and some officials in Sanchez's party, who argue that it would endanger the rule of law./ REL
