NATO will hold membership talks with Sweden before the July summit

NATO will hold talks with Sweden on alliance membership before the summit in July. This was announced by the head of NATO, who said that Turkey has agreed to this meeting.

The Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, said that he has spoken with the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and "we have agreed on a high-level meeting in Brussels before the summit" of the alliance.

"Foreign ministers, heads of intelligence and national security advisers will participate in this meeting. The goal is to make progress in completing Sweden's accession to NATO," he added.

Stoltenberg spoke to reporters from the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius, where the NATO summit will be held on July 11 and 12.

Sweden has been a NATO "guest" country since June 2022, but Stockholm's membership must be ratified by the 31 member states. Until now, Hungary and Turkey have blocked the admission of this state.

Western officials hope Erdogan will soften his stance on the issue after his re-election to the presidency last month.

Western countries, particularly the United States, are urging Ankara to ratify Sweden's accession, insisting that Stockholm has fulfilled the terms of the deal it reached with Turkey last year.

That agreement also included a commitment to suppress Kurdish opposition movements, such as the Kurdistan Workers' Party, which Ankara considers a terrorist group./ REL
