Greece: Mitsotakis sees election victory as a mandate for change

Greece's conservative leader, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, has defeated his center-left rival, Alexis Tsipras, and said he has a "strong mandate" to push ahead on the path of change.

On Sunday, Greece held its second parliamentary election in a month.

Mitsotakis's New Democracy party won 40.5 percent of the vote, almost 23 percent more than Tsipras' Syriza party.

He defeated Syriza in May as well, but he announced new elections to win the necessary majority to govern the state himself.

"New Democracy is today the most powerful center-right party in Europe," Mitsotakis told his supporters in Athens.

Mitsotakis is known for restoring stability to Greece's economy and debt management.

Although many Greeks are currently suffering from rising living costs, they have voted for the party that has promised lower taxes and improved public health.

Tsipras's party, Syriza, has lost even more deeply than in previous elections, winning around 18 percent of the vote.

He rejected speculations about his resignation, saying that such a decision belongs to the members of the party./ Rel
