The situation in Moscow/Latvia closes the border with Russia

Latvia has announced it has closed its border to Russian citizens as the country faces an armed rebellion against the regime.

Latvian President-elect Edgars Rinkevics said his country will not accept Russians.

"Latvia is closely following the developing situation in Russia... Border security has been strengthened, visa or entry for Russians leaving Russia due to current events will not be considered," Rinkevics wrote on Twitter.

"Latvia will not issue humanitarian or other types of visas," added the president-elect, who is still foreign minister.

He also said that there is no "direct threat to Latvia at this moment".

Due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Latvia last year banned the issuance of new visas to Russian citizens, but made exceptions for humanitarian visas.

It is unclear whether visas issued so far will remain valid for entry.

The situation in Russia became tense on Friday night when Yevgeny Prigozhin, leader of the Russian mercenary group Wagner, called for rebellion against the Russian army.

He accused him of attacks against his forces in Ukraine, which Moscow denied.

Wagner said on Saturday that he had taken control of the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don, near the border with Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed to punish this rebellion, while the Kremlin ordered Prigozhin's arrest./ REL
