NASA changes plans for Artemis III mission/ Astronauts' Moon landing

The US Space Agency, NASA, has announced radical changes to the delayed Artemis III mission, temporarily removing the goal of sending humans to the surface of the Moon.

The newly confirmed NASA administrator, Jared Isaacman, announced that at least one new lunar mission will be carried out before attempting to return astronauts to the Moon for the first time in more than 50 years.

According to the new plan, landing humans on the lunar surface is expected to occur in 2028. The change in strategy comes at a time when the agency is facing delays, technical problems and criticism that it is trying to accomplish too many objectives at once.

The Artemis program aims to restore human presence on the Moon and lay the groundwork for future missions to Mars.

The US is under pressure to return to the Moon. China aims for a lunar landing by 2030 and has been making steady progress towards that.

Both nations are planning to land on the moon's south pole and are competing for the best places to build their lunar bases. /CNA
