Serious accident in Milan/ Tram derails, two dead and dozens injured

At least two people have died and around 40 others have been injured after a tram derailed in Milan, Italy.

The crowded tram was traveling on line 9 along Milan's Viale Vittorio Veneto at around 4:00 p.m. local time when it derailed and crashed into a building.

One of the people who died, a 60-year-old man, is suspected of being a pedestrian hit by the tram, while the other victim and most of the injured were passengers.

Multiple ambulances rushed to the scene after reports of people trapped in the rubble.

As it derailed, the tram reportedly first hit a traffic light before breaking a restaurant window. Civil defense teams have set up a tent at the scene to help the injured.

It is not clear what caused the derailment, although it is suspected that the tram had taken a turn at too high a speed.

Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala and other city officials went to the scene of the accident. Sala called the incident a tragedy and promised to investigate the causes of the accident. The possibility that the tram driver was killed is currently being considered.

The incident comes at a time when the city is packed with international visitors, celebrities and journalists for Milan Fashion Week. /CNA
