US-Iran tensions cause panic in the region/ Britain withdraws embassy staff from

Britain has temporarily withdrawn staff from its embassy in Tehran amid escalating tensions between the US and Iran. In a statement, the British Foreign Office said its embassy in the Iranian capital would continue to operate remotely.

Meanwhile, the US embassy in Israel notified some non-emergency employees that they could leave the country on Friday. US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee advised staff who wanted to leave that they should leave the country today.

The departures come a day after Washington and Tehran held talks, which are seen as a last-ditch effort to avoid a war over Iran's nuclear ambitions.

A number of other countries, including China, India and Canada, have told their citizens to leave Iran as soon as possible due to the possibility of an attack.

US President Donald Trump has threatened military action against Tehran if it fails to reach a deal on its nuclear program. He has ordered the largest US military buildup in the Middle East since the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, while Iran has vowed to respond forcefully to any action.

Vice President JD Vance told the Washington Post that airstrikes remained under consideration, but there was no chance the US would be involved in a protracted war.

Thursday's indirect talks in Geneva between the two countries resulted in significant progress, said mediator Oman, adding that further negotiations will take place soon. /CNA
