German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will visit the White House next week at the invitation of US President Donald Trump.
German government deputy spokesman Sebastian Hille said the two leaders will hold talks in the Oval Office in the morning and then have lunch together.
As the main topics in the talks, Hille mentioned bilateral relations, the international security situation, and trade and competition issues.
A significant point of trade tension at the moment between the EU and the US is Trump's tariff policy and the uncertainty caused by a recent Supreme Court ruling.
This visit also comes after Merz's decision not to join the Peace Board, the war situation in Ukraine, and amid tensions caused by the possibility that the US could strike Iran.
This will mark the German leader's third visit to the White House. Merz made his first visit in June, where he urged Trump to put more pressure on Russia to end its war in Ukraine.
He returned in mid-August, joining European heads of state and government after Trump held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. /CNA
