Moscow records heaviest snowfall in over 200 years

Moscow, the capital of Russia, experienced the heaviest snowfall in more than 200 years this January, according to data from the Meteorological Observatory of Moscow State University.

By January 29, almost 92 mm of precipitation had been recorded, the highest figure in 203 years of meteorological records.

Meteorologists said the phenomenon was caused by deep cyclones and powerful atmospheric fronts that passed over the Moscow region during the month. Moreover, the temperature in the capital was about 1.5°C below the climate norm for January.

Heavy rainfall has caused transportation difficulties: passenger trains have been delayed, while vehicles have been stuck in traffic in some areas of the city, with up to 60 cm of snow in some places.

This extraordinary situation brings attention back to the impact of extreme weather conditions, while Moscow municipal services continue their work to clear streets and ensure normal city traffic./CNA
