German Minister: G7 must respond to Iran's attack

The group of industrialized countries (G7) must definitely respond to Iran's attack against Israel, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said on Thursday.

Baerbock stressed that she and her counterparts are discussing possible measures against Iran during a meeting in Italy.

"We are talking about additional measures here at the G7 because, of course, there must be a response to this unprecedented incident," said Baerbock.

However, she added that "the assessment should not escalate further in the region; which would be fatal for its population".

The G7 consists of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Great Britain and the United States.

The Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, warned on Thursday that the escalation of tensions as a result of the war in the Strip

Gaza and Iran's attack on Israel could lead to a "general regional conflict".

Guterres said Israel's war in Gaza has created a "humanitarian hellscape" for people trapped there.

He said that wrong calculations or lack of proper communication "could lead to a complete and unimaginable regional conflict".

Iran said it carried out the April 13 attack against Israel in retaliation for an alleged Israeli attack on an Iranian consulate in Syria on April 1.

Israel has vowed to respond to Iran's attack, without saying how or when.

Iran has said that it considers this issue closed, but has warned that, in case of retaliation "even the smallest" on Iranian territory, its response would be "extraordinary and severe"./ Rel
