Countless species of animals and plants are threatened with extinction. The international community has now adopted an agreement to prevent the disappearance of biodiversity.
After about two weeks of negotiations, the participants of the World Summit for Nature in Montreal, Canada, agreed on a final declaration. The most important part of the agreement is the commitment to declare by 2030 as protected areas 30% of land and water surfaces that are considered important for biodiversity. Currently, only 17% of land surfaces and 10% of marine surfaces are protected worldwide.
Andrew Deutz, director of global policy, institutions and conservation finance at The Nature Conservancy, said the agreement sends some strong signals in terms of finance and biodiversity, but does not go beyond the targets set 10 years ago, when words for addressing the root causes of biodiversity loss in productive sectors such as agriculture, fisheries and infrastructure. There is therefore a risk that the new agreement will not be fully transformative, Deutz said.
The 15th World Summit on Nature - COP15 - was originally scheduled to be held in China in 2020, but was postponed due to the ongoing pandemic situation. The first part of the negotiations took place last October, mostly online, in Kun-Ming, China./ DW
