Kosovo's acting Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, has traveled to the United States of America to participate in the high-level week of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, his office announced on Thursday.

Kurti will hold "bilateral meetings with leaders within the framework of the high-level week of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly," the announcement states.

The Prime Minister's Office did not indicate who the leaders are with whom Kurti will hold bilateral meetings.

She said that "through participation in the high-level week and the planned meetings, the aim is to deepen bilateral relations with partner countries, further strengthen the international subjectivity of our state in relation to non-recognizing countries, and present the opportunities and advantages that Kosovo offers to foreign investors."

During his stay in New York, Kurti will also meet members of the Albanian community in the US and representatives of diaspora associations, according to the announcement.

Kurti's trip to New York comes at a time when relations between Kosovo and the United States suffered a blow earlier this month.

Washington announced on September 12 the suspension of the planned Strategic Dialogue due to actions by the acting Government of Kosovo, which it said have increased tensions and instability in the country.

The US Embassy in Pristina said that the actions of the Kurti-led government have "increased tensions and instability, limiting the United States' ability to work productively with Kosovo on shared priorities."

"Unfortunately, the recent actions and statements of the acting Prime Minister Kurti have posed challenges to the progress achieved over the years," she said, without explaining what statements and actions are in question exactly.

Kurti later said that the incumbent government has "some" differences in positions with the US, but insisted that relations between the two countries have not broken down.

He said that the differences between him and the United States "often have to do with our positions in relation to Serbia and actions against its illegal structures in Kosovo."

Meanwhile, the country's president, Vjosa Osmani, is also in New York this week, and has held several meetings so far.

On Wednesday, Osmani met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, with whom he said he had a "substantive" conversation.

She continued her meetings with the High Representative of the European Union, Kaja Kallas, to whom she reiterated Kosovo's request for the lifting of the EU's punitive measures./ REL
