China: An American plane flew over the Taiwan Strait

China's military said on Wednesday it sent fighter jets to monitor and warn a US Navy patrol plane that flew over the sensitive Taiwan Strait, weeks before an election in Taiwan.

China claims sovereignty over democratic Taiwan, and says it has jurisdiction over its strait as well.

Taiwan and the United States dispute this and say the Taiwan Strait is an international waterway.

The US Navy said its P-8A aircraft, which are also used for anti-submarine missions, flew over the strait in international airspace.

"The plane's passage through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the United States' commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific. The US military flies, sails and operates wherever international law allows," she said in a statement.

China's military described the flight as a "public outcry", adding that its warplanes were dispatched to observe and warn the US plane, and to deal with it "in accordance with law and regulations".

Taiwan is preparing for presidential and parliamentary elections on January 13, which China has described as an election of war and peace.

China has increased its military activities around Taiwan in the last four years./ REL
