Former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo was found guilty Monday of taking bribes from Brazilian construction company Odebrecht and sentenced to 20 years and six months in prison.

The decision marks the first high-profile conviction in Peru related to the codenamed "Lava Jato" (car wash) operation that led to the revelation of a corruption scandal in Brazil.

Alejandro Toledo, 78, an economist with a PhD from Stanford University, led Peru from 2001 to 2006.

He was convicted of taking $35 million in bribes from the company formerly known as Odebrecht, according to prosecutors, in exchange for a contract for it to build the road that now links Peru's southern coast to an area in western Brazil.

During the year-long trial, Mr. Toledo denied charges of money laundering and conspiring to restrict competition.

The Odebrecht company, now known as Novonor, was at the center of Latin America's biggest corruption scandal after admitting in 2016 that it had bribed officials in dozens of countries to secure public works contracts.

Last week, former President Toledo asked the court to allow him to serve his sentence at home as he battles cancer.

"Please let me get well or die at home," he said.

The sentence was handed down in a small prison in Lima, where Toledo has been incarcerated since last year.

Former president Pedro Castillo is being held in the same prison as he faces charges of "rebellion" after he tried to dissolve Congress in 2022.

Two other former presidents, Pedro Pablo Kuczynski and Ollanta Humala, are also under investigation for the "Odebrec" case.
