India gets ready for historic landing on the Moon

India is set to become the first country in the world to land a spacecraft on the moon's south pole on August 23, days after a Russian probe crashed in the same region.

This attempt to travel to the moon is a historic moment for the world's most populous country, as India thus approaches the historic achievement of global space powers.

Chandrayaan-3 is scheduled to arrive near the little-explored lunar south pole around 18:00 local time (13:30 in Kosovo).

"India Goes to the Moon," read the front-page headline of The Times of India on August 23, as the mission is currently dominating the media in India. "It's D-Day for the Moon Mission," wrote the Hindustan Times.

An earlier attempt by India for this mission had failed in 2019. The new attempt comes just days after Russia's first moon mission in almost 50 years, destined for the same region, crashed on the lunar surface.

But former Indian space chief K. Sivan said the latest pictures transmitted by the spacecraft gave signs that the final leg of the journey to the moon's south pole would be a success.

"It gives us some encouragement that we will be able to achieve the landing mission without any problems," he told the AFP news agency.

Sivan added that the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) had made corrections after the failure four years ago, when scientists lost contact with the spacecraft moments before the planned landing.

The mission launched nearly six weeks ago in front of thousands of spectators, but this spacecraft took much longer to reach the Moon than the Apollo missions of the 1960s and 1970s, which arrived in a matter of days.

India is using much less powerful rockets than the ones the United States was using at the time, meaning the probe has to circle the Earth several times to gain speed before starting its month-long lunar trajectory.
