Identification through genetic testing/ First wolf-dog hybrid confirmed in

The first confirmed wolf-dog hybrid has been identified in Greece through genetic testing, according to researchers at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

Biology teacher Nikoletta Karaiskou announced that her team confirmed the presence of the hybrid using advanced genetic methods. The discovery was made as part of a broader research initiative, carried out in collaboration with the environmental organization Kallisto as part of a European program that aims to measure the extent of wolf-dog hybridization in Greece.

"We have completed a study of 50 samples from the Central Macedonia region, where the hybridization phenomenon appears to be particularly intense. In total, we analyzed around 200 samples from all over Greece in collaboration with the Henkel Institute in Frankfurt," Karaiskou said.

Karaiskou noted that while hybridization is a natural process that can lead to the emergence of new species, human activities can intensify it, potentially threatening wild populations.

"The issue arises when it occurs due to anthropogenic interventions, then there may be negative impacts for a species," said the researcher.

Greek media outlet Kathimerini writes that the findings come amid growing concerns in the Kilkis area, in northern Greece, where local authorities and farmers have reported increasing incidents of attacks on livestock by those believed to be hybrids.

"Residents constantly see them outside their homes and in their fields. These hybrids don't just live in forests or mountains, they approach villages, even enter them. They are not afraid," said a farmer.

Authorities are now monitoring the situation closely and more frequently in rural Greek areas./CNA
