New border control system in 29 European countries comes into effect tomorrow

A new digital border management system will become operational in 29 European countries from tomorrow. In a press release, the Council of Europe announces that this system will improve the effectiveness and efficiency of controls at the EU's external borders.

The new system will digitally record entries and exits, as well as passport data, fingerprints and facial images of people from non-EU countries travelling for short stays to EU member states.

This new border management system (ESS), according to the Council of Europe, will increase the security of the Schengen area and contribute to the prevention of irregular migration.

Since it digitally records information from passports and biometric data, the EES can provide real-time information on whether people have completed their authorised period of stay in the Schengen area. 

The statement says that the system will be implemented gradually (allowing EU countries to start using it at some border points and with fewer functionalities) and will become fully operational after six months, starting from April 10, 2026./CNA
