Ceasefire enters into force/Israeli troops withdraw from parts of Gaza

The Israeli military has announced it has partially withdrawn troops from some parts of Gaza, after a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas came into effect this Friday.

Israeli forces said they had withdrawn to an agreed position within the territory, although troops still occupy half of the Strip.

The footage shows thousands of Palestinians heading towards northern Gaza, which has been heavily bombarded by Israeli forces in recent months.

The ceasefire came into effect after the Israeli government approved the first phase of US President Donald Trump's deal on a ceasefire and the return of hostages on Thursday. The next phases are still being negotiated.

Under the deal, Hamas has until 12:00 local time (10:00 BST) on Monday to release all Israeli hostages - including 20 believed to be alive, and up to 28 remaining hostages.

Israel is also to release about 250 Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences in Israeli jails. Israeli Army Radio said 100 of them would be released in the West Bank and five in East Jerusalem. Others are expected to be deported.

Another 1,700 Palestinians from Gaza who have been detained must be released.

Under the terms of the agreement, aid trucks must also be allowed into the Strip without restrictions to bring urgently needed aid to the Gaza population - many of whom have been continuously displaced during the two-year war.

About 600 trucks of aid are expected to enter Gaza each day from Friday, although details of the distribution remain unclear and it has not yet been confirmed whether any additional aid has reached the people since the ceasefire began./ CNA
