Signing of the ceasefire agreement/ What is expected to happen next?

Israel's signing of the ceasefire agreement has set several things in motion, both in the short and long term.

But what is expected to happen after the agreement is signed?

A ceasefire in Gaza

Now that the agreement has been officially approved by the Israeli cabinet, a ceasefire is expected to come into effect.

Reports in Israeli media suggest this will happen immediately, although a spokesman for the prime minister's office said it would begin within 24 hours of cabinet approval.

Israeli troops will withdraw

The Israeli military will withdraw to a line that will leave it in control of about 53% of the Strip. According to a map distributed by the White House last week, this is the first of three phases of the Israeli withdrawal.

An exchange of hostages and bodies

After that, a 72-hour countdown will begin, during which Hamas must release all 20 hostages believed to be alive. The bodies of the 28 dead hostages will follow, although it is not clear how long this might take.

Israel will then release around 250 Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences in Israeli jails and 1,700 detainees from Gaza, a Palestinian source told the BBC.

Israel will also return the bodies of 15 Gazans for the body of every Israeli hostage, under Trump's plan.

Humanitarian aid will enter Gaza

Hundreds of trucks carrying humanitarian aid will also begin entering Gaza, where a famine was confirmed by UN-backed experts in August./CNA
