Report published: Hungary spies on the EU

On Thursday, the Belgian newspaper De Tijd published a report according to which Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban had been sending Hungarian spies to the European Union, to its institutions in Brussels, for years.

The report comes from months of well-organized work by a media group consisting of De Tijd, together with Direkt36, a non-profit center for investigative journalism in Hungary; Paper Trail Media, a German collective; Der Spiegel, a German news magazine; and Der Standard, an Austrian newspaper.

It is based on information received from the Hungarian Intelligence Service, the diplomatic mission there, as well as from EU officials who had dealt with the spies themselves.

Reuters reported on Thursday that an EC spokesman announced that the Commission had voted to open an investigation into allegations that Hungary was spying on European institutions.

The report also mentions a Hungarian working for the EC, whom it does not identify. He was a diplomat at Hungary's permanent representation to the EU, but after two years of meetings with an unnamed individual, after being offered a spy contract by the latter, the diplomat politely declined, claiming he was protecting the country's interests.

This type of espionage within European institutions is more a Russian and Chinese tactic than a practice of the EU states themselves.

A decade ago, IH intelligence officers in Brussels began working undercover while posted as diplomats, which offered them greater protection and freedom. This is a modus operandi for many intelligence agencies, but Russia is best known for this method./CNA
