President Donald Trump has threatened to pull out of a much-anticipated meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping after Beijing tightened its rules on rare earth metal exports.
In a post on social media, Trump said he now saw no reason to meet with President Xi, accusing China of becoming too hostile and trying to hold the world captive.
He also threatened a massive increase in tariffs on Chinese goods, signaling a return to renewed trade tensions between the two economic giants.
In addition to tightening rules on rare earth exports, China has opened an antitrust investigation into US technology firm Qualcomm, which could prevent it from acquiring another chipmaker.
It has also said it will apply new port fees to ships with US ties, including those owned or operated by American firms.
"Some very strange things are happening in China!" Trump wrote in a social media post on Friday.
