The person arrested for war crimes is suspected of participating in the murder

RD, arrested on September 12, is suspected of participating in the murder of 71 Albanian civilians in Vushtrri in 1999, Kosovo Police announced.

According to the Police, he had been an officer mobilized with units composed of the Serbian Ministry of Interior.

"The criminal offense was committed during the period of May 22, 1999, acting in a group and organized as an officer mobilized with units composed of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Serbia, participated in the deprivation of life-murder of 71 Albanian civilians. After the interview, by decision of the prosecutor, the suspect was taken into custody," the announcement said.

The statement issued on Friday by the Special Prosecution Office and the Police said that RD is suspected of war crimes against the civilian population, but no further details were given on when these crimes were committed and where.

Recently, the Kosovo Special Prosecution Office has filed several charges for crimes committed during the 1998-99 war.

In August, it even filed an indictment in absentia against 21 suspects in the forcible expulsion of more than 800,000 Albanian civilians from Kosovo during the war.

Since the end of the war, dozens of people have been convicted of war crimes before local and international institutions.

From 2000 to 2008, war crimes in Kosovo were investigated by the United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), and since 2008, by the European Union Rule of Law Mission (EULEX).

In 2018, EULEX handed over the cases to the Kosovo Prosecutor's Office and local courts.

During the last war in Kosovo in 1998-1999, more than 13,000 civilians were killed and thousands more disappeared.

Nearly 1,600 people are still missing - most of them Albanians. /REL
