Trump warns of tough sanctions on Russia if NATO stops buying oil

US President Donald Trump has said that Washington will impose "serious" new sanctions on Russia only if all NATO member countries agree to stop buying Russian oil.

Trump made these comments in a statement posted on his Truth Social account.

"I am ready to impose major sanctions on Russia when all NATO countries have agreed and started doing the same, and when all NATO countries stop buying oil from Russia," he wrote.

The president criticized what he described as insufficient commitment by the Alliance to defeat Russia.

"As you know, NATO's commitment to winning has been far less than 100% and the purchase of Russian oil, by some, has been shocking! This greatly weakens your negotiating position and bargaining power with Russia," Trump declared.

Trump also asked NATO to impose tariffs on Chinese goods.

“NATO, as a group, by imposing tariffs of 50% to 100% on China, which will be fully withdrawn after the end of the War with Russia and Ukraine, will also be a great help in Ending this deadly but ridiculous war. China has a strong hold, and even control, over Russia, and these powerful tariffs will break that hold. If NATO does as I say, the war will be over soon and all those lives will be saved! If not, you are just wasting my time, the time, energy and money of the United States,” Trump writes.

Earlier, at the YES 2025 conference in Kyiv, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Russia's war would end only when the Kremlin's resources were exhausted, stressing that sanctions, export restrictions and military aid are the only effective means to force Moscow to recalculate its goals.
