Militants kill 12 Pakistani soldiers

At least 12 Pakistani soldiers were killed and four others were injured during an attack carried out by the militant group Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in the Bar area of ??South Waziristan on September 13, the Pakistani military said.

Pakistan's military said its troops were conducting operations against militants when they faced a counterattack.

The army's media office confirmed the incident, but in a statement said it had killed 13 militants during the operation. A senior police official in the area, who spoke on condition of anonymity to Radio Free Europe's Radio Mashaal, confirmed the attack on a military vehicle in the Badar Fakir Sarai area.

The TTP, also known as the Pakistani Taliban, claimed responsibility for the attack. The militant group's spokesman, Muhammad Khurasani, said 30 soldiers were killed.

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty has not been able to independently confirm these claims.

The Pakistani Taliban are a separate group from the Afghan Taliban, although they have a close alliance. Since the Afghan Taliban took control of Kabul in 2021, the TTP has gained confidence and most of its leaders and fighters have found refuge along the Afghan border.

Islamabad accuses the Taliban government in Afghanistan of providing sanctuary to the Pakistani Taliban, with support from India - an accusation that has raised tensions in both Kabul and New Delhi, which deny the allegations.

This attack follows another similar attack on September 12 in Lover Dir, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, when militants killed seven Frontier Corps soldiers and wounded 13 others, according to local police and an intelligence official.

Security operations against militants have intensified recently in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, following frequent attacks by militants targeting Pakistan's army and paramilitary forces. On September 11, the Pakistani army announced that it had killed 19 militants during operations in the Momand, North Waziristan and Bannu districts./ REL
