Hamas rejects ceasefire proposal/ 1 dead from Israeli attacks in Lebanon

Hamas rejected a proposal for a short-term ceasefire and deal to release hostages. This is what the US State Department says.

The revelation is contained in a statement issued by the United States, on the occasion of the telephone conversation held on Sunday by Secretary of State Antony Blinken with the Egyptian Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty.

Blinken "noted that Hamas has again refused to release a limited number of hostages to secure a ceasefire and aid for the people of Gaza," the US statement said. Egypt had submitted a proposal that would include an initial 48-hour ceasefire, during which Hamas would prepare to release four Israeli hostages over the next 10 days, two Arab diplomats told The Times of Israel.

The four hostages had to fall into the so-called humanitarian category, meaning they had to be women, elderly or sick. In return, Israel was expected to release about 100 Palestinian prisoners, diplomats said. During the 12-day deal, Israel and Hamas will hold talks on a more durable ceasefire.

Meanwhile, Lebanon's National News Agency (NNA) says one person has died in an attack by Israeli drones and warplanes that hit the southern city of Haris tonight. NNA also reports raids in Khiam, Deir El Zahrani, Srifa and Deir Kifa. Lebanon's Health Ministry said yesterday's Israeli attacks in the country killed 16 people and injured 90 others on Monday, for a total of 3,002 deaths and 13,492 injuries since October 2023, foreign media reported.
