The Supreme Court refuses to handle Trump's immunity case with a fast-track
Donald Trump

The Supreme Court has decided, for now, not to decide whether former US President Donald Trump has immunity from criminal prosecution for suspicions that he tried to overturn the election result in the 2020 presidential election.

The decision means that the case will continue to go through appeal procedures.

The judges of the Supremes have opposed the extraordinary request of the Special Prosecutor Jack Smith, who has asked the court to deal with this case in an accelerated manner.

Prosecutors have accused Trump — the Republican front-runner to win the 2024 presidential nomination — of trying to block Congress from certifying the victory of incumbent Joe Biden in the 2020 election.

Trump has said the case should be overturned, as former US presidents cannot face criminal charges for actions related to their official duties.

American judge Tanya Chutkan rejected Trump's claim, who then appealed the decision. Trump's appeal has suspended the trial, scheduled for March.

In an ongoing attempt to avoid a delay in the trial against Trump, prosecutor Smith has called on the Supreme Court to make a decision on this case.

If Trump wins another term as president, he can pardon himself for any federal crime.

Three of the nine judges of the Supreme Court are appointed by Trump, who has cemented the conservative majority in this body with nine members./ Rel
