Germany arrests suspected Hamas members believed to be targeting Jewish

German authorities have arrested three suspected foreign Hamas operatives who they believe were preparing a serious act of violence in Germany, prosecutors said on Wednesday.

Hamas is a Palestinian group declared a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.

According to prosecutors, the three men were allegedly involved, at least since the summer of this year, in providing firearms and ammunition to Hamas, with the aim of using them in attacks against Israeli or Jewish institutions in Germany.

"During today's arrests, various weapons were recovered, including an AK-47 assault rifle and several pistols, as well as a significant amount of ammunition," federal prosecutors said in a statement.

All three suspects - identified under German privacy laws only as German citizen Abed Al G., Lebanese-born Wael FM, and German citizen Ahmad I. - were arrested in Berlin.

In February, four Hamas members suspected of planning attacks on Jewish institutions in Europe went on trial in Berlin, in what prosecutors described as the first trial of militants from the Islamist group in Germany.

German newspaper Der Spiegel reported that counter-terrorism investigators observed the accused meeting in Berlin on Wednesday to hand over weapons, before operational forces intervened and discovered functional weapons./REL
