G7 warns Russia against using North Korean troops in Ukraine

The foreign ministers of the Group of the most industrialized nations (G7) and three of the group's key allies said they are deeply concerned about the deployment of North Korean troops in Russia and the possibility that they could be used in Moscow's war against Ukraine.

"North Korea's direct support for Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, in addition to showing Russia's desperate efforts to compensate for its losses, also represents a dangerous escalation of the conflict," the ministers' statement said.

In addition to the G7 members – the United States, Japan, Italy, Britain, Germany, France and Canada – the statement was also signed by South Korea, Australia and New Zealand.

The ministers also said they "strongly" condemn the increase in military cooperation between North Korea and Russia, including the "illegal purchase" of North Korean ballistic missiles by Russia.

They also said they were concerned about the possibility of any high-tech shipments linked to nuclear weapons or ballistic missiles to North Korea, adding that they would work with international partners "for a coordinated response" if such a thing would happen.

The United States, NATO, South Korea and Ukraine have confirmed that thousands of North Korean troops have been deployed to Russia, while Washington has said that troops are likely to be deployed on the battlefield in Ukraine within days.

North Korea and Russia have not commented on the deployment of soldiers. However, Pyongyang has declared that it will support Russia until it triumphs in Ukraine./ REL
