The Cambridge Dictionary reveals the word of the year and it has a new meaning

Cambridge Dictionary has announced "hallucinate" as its word of the year for 2023 – giving the term an additional, new meaning in relation to artificial intelligence technology.

The traditional definition of "hallucinating" is when someone seems to feel something that isn't there, usually due to a medical condition or drug intake, but now also associated with Artificial Intelligence producing false information.

The Cambridge Dictionary's additional definition says: "When an artificial intelligence (=a computer system that has some of the qualities of the human brain, such as the ability to produce language in a way that appears human) hallucinates, it produces false information. "

This year has seen a surge of interest in AI tools like ChatGPT. The accessible chatbot has even been used by a British judge to write part of a court decision, while an author told Sky News how it was helping with novels.

AI hallucinations, also known as confabulations, are when tools provide false information, which can range from suggestions that seem completely plausible to those that are clearly completely nonsensical./ CNA
