State of emergency in some parts of France after record rainfall / Mayor: People

Widespread flooding in northern and eastern France has forced thousands of people to evacuate their flooded homes, collapsed roads and closed schools and public buildings.

Record rainfall has caused rivers to break their banks, forcing the government to declare an official state of emergency in hundreds of towns and villages.

An emergency fund of €50m (£43m) has been set aside to help local authorities deal with the crisis. Another 80 million euros were being used to help farmers in the most affected areas, Agriculture Minister Marc Fesneau announced on Wednesday.

In the Haute-Savoie Alps in eastern France, which remained on red alert, residents in the Chamonix valley and around the Arve River were advised to stay indoors until at least midday on Wednesday.

Almost 300 homes were without power and many roads were closed due to the risk of landslides.

President Emmanuel Macron visited the Calais area on Tuesday and pledged state aid to companies, workers and families affected by the historic floods, saying emergency measures put in place last year had saved lives.

The Pas-de-Calais region, in northern France, has been lowered from red to orange alert, residents of the Haute-Savoie Alps in eastern France have been kept on high alert, foreign media write.

In Pas-de-Calais, more rain is forecast on Thursday, calm on Friday and more storms over the weekend.
