WHO: Most hospitals in Gaza are closed
Shifa Hospital in Gaza

Only a quarter of Gaza's hospitals are still operational, as 26 of the 36 health facilities have already been closed, the World Health Organization (WHO) said.

According to the WHO, hospitals that have gone out of business have either been damaged or run out of fuel.

This United Nations agency has lost contact with the health staff at Shifa Hospital, which is the largest hospital in Gaza. This is what the director of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said on November 15 in Geneva. He said that the Israeli army's raid on this institution "is totally unacceptable".

About 82 bodies from Shifa were buried in a mass grave on Wednesday, while another 80 bodies have yet to be buried, said Dr. Rik Peeperkorn, who is the WHO representative for the West Bank and Gaza. He said that 45 patients are being treated with dialysis and the hospital has no electricity, water and the oxygen supply system is out of order.

Peeperkorn said that several organizations, including the WHO, "are urgently exploring the possibility of an evacuation of patients and health staff". He called for a plan to be drawn up to evacuate nearly 2,000 seriously ill patients from Gaza. He said that this evacuation could be done in the next three months and these patients could be sent to Egypt.

The Israeli military on Wednesday launched a raid on Shifa Hospital, saying Hamas - a Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union - has a command center in and around the hospital. These claims have been rejected by Hamas and the staff of this hospital.

Israel has vowed to destroy Hamas after the extremist group carried out deadly attacks in southern Israel on October 7, killing at least 1,200 people and kidnapping nearly 240 others. As a result of the repeated Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip - inhabited by 2.3 million Palestinians - more than 11,000 Palestinians have been killed./ REL
