Finland's prime minister, Petteri Orpo, said Wednesday that authorities in his country are investigating the damage caused to undersea power cables that are connected to Estonia.
An unplanned outage on the 'Estlink 2' line occurred during the day according to the announcement of the Finnish company Fingrid, reducing the production capacity to 358 megawatts from over 1,000 which is its full capacity.
"Despite the fact that we are on the Christmas holiday, the authorities are ready to investigate the case", said Prime Minister Orpo through a publication on the X social network.
The outage did not affect Finland's electricity supply, he added.
Authorities in the region have been on high alert to respond to possible cases of sabotage after a spate of damage to power cables, gas pipelines and telephone lines in recent years. However, submarine cables often face technical problems and interruptions caused by accidents.
"An investigation into the incident has been launched", one of the managers of the Fingrid company, Arto Pahki, said in a statement./ VOA
