Large celebrations as illegal gatherings / The Italian government is about to change the law

Italy's new government, led by Giorgia Meloni, has said it will make large celebrations illegal, hours after banning such an event in northern Italy.

The new crime of "dangerous gatherings" of more than 50 people can be punished with up to six years in prison and paves the way for surveillance of the organizers.

On Monday, more than 1,000 people were told to leave a large party in Modena.

"The party has come to an end!" declared the minister of the extreme right, Matteo Salvini.

Residents have complained about 48 hours of loud music at a Halloween party, which has attracted many young people from Italian cities, but also from Belgium and France.

The participants planned to celebrate until Tuesday, but after the order of the authorities, they left.

Prime Minister Meloni has argued that the new law aims to protect people from potential harm and does not constitute a change from the rest of Europe.

According to her, such a decision shows that the Italian state is no longer weak in respecting the rules.

The previous government had already started work on changing the law, after organizing a big party in 2021, which ended with two people dead.

Critics have questioned why the government has targeted youth-led parties and ignored a weekend fascist march of more than 2,000 supporters of former Italian dictator Benito Mussolini.

In this organization, fascist anthems were sung, Mussolini's march to Rome and the start of the fascist regime 100 years ago were remembered.

The Italian Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, has argued that the two events were "completely different" and that Mussolini's march did not disrupt public order and was held for years.

On the other hand, according to him, loud music celebrations have caused concern in Modena.
