Russian attacks in Ukraine/ A 2-year-old girl was killed and 22 people were injured

2023-06-04 09:29:00, Kosova & Bota CNA

A two-year-old girl was killed and 22 other people were injured, as a result of a Russian air attack, in an area inhabited by civilians in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro.

Her body was pulled from the ruins of a house during the night. Serhiy Lysak, governor of the Dnipro region, has said that five of the injured are children, and three boys are in serious condition.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has blamed Russia for the attacks, but the Kremlin has yet to comment. Zelensky said that the explosions in Dnipro were intentional.

Explosions were also heard in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, where air defense systems were activated. Throughout the night, sirens were heard across the state. Russian airstrikes have intensified in recent weeks over Ukraine, as there are expectations for the launch of Kiev's counter-offensive, with the aim of recapturing territories occupied by Russian forces since the start of the war.

Zelensky said on June 3 that Ukrainian forces are ready to launch a counteroffensive. However, later, a close aide of Zelensky, Uhor Zhovkva, said that his country is not yet ready to start something like this. Speaking to the British newspaper Sunday Times, Zhovkva cited the lack of weapons and ammunition as a reason.

The Sunday Times has said that inconsistent statements by Ukrainian officials may be done on purpose to confuse Moscow.

The war in Ukraine started on February 24, 2022. The Russian president, Vladimir Putin, calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine. The West has responded to Russia, hitting the economy of this country with harsh sanctions.

As a result of the war, thousands of people have died and millions more have been displaced from their homes./REL
