The commander of the Iranian navy, Shahram Irani, has said that his country, and Saudi Arabia, as well as three other Gulf states, plan to form a naval alliance.

India and Pakistan will also be included there, Iranian media have reported.

"The countries of the region have realized today that only cooperation with each other guarantees the security of the area", Irani was quoted as saying.

He did not give details on what level the alliance will be formed, but he said that it will be implemented soon.

Finally, Iran has attempted to mend strained relations with several Arab Gulf states.

In March, Saudi Arabia and Iran ended seven years of hostilities through an agreement brokered by China that emphasized the importance of regional stability and economic cooperation.

Saudi Arabia's new approach with Iran has angered Israel, which is trying to isolate Iran diplomatically.

The United Arab Emirates, the first Arab Gulf state to sign an agreement with Israel to normalize relations in 2020, restored ties with Iran last year.

Bahrain and Morocco later joined the Emirates in restoring ties with Israel./ REL
