The Special Prosecution of Kosovo has announced that it has arrested on Monday a Kosovo citizen of Montenegrin nationality, from the village of Vitomirica in Peja, suspected of having committed war crimes against the civilian population in Kosovo.

The case concerns the offensive of the Serbian military, police and paramilitary forces on May 7, 1999 in the Peja region, where nine Albanian civilians were killed and five others disappeared. The person with the initials MD is suspected of having participated in the crime.

“Me urdhër të Prokurorit të Shtetit, i pandehuri gjendet nën masën e arrestit dhe ndalimit policor, për t’u dërguar para Gjyqtarit të Procedurës Paraprake, brenda afatit ligjor”, thuhet në njoftimin e Prokurorisë.

Që nga përfundimi i konfliktit të armatosur në Kosovë, nga Gjyqësori vendor dhe ndërkombëtar janë dënuar rreth 70 persona për krime të luftës. Gjatë luftës së fundit në Kosovë janë vrarë 13, 518 persona, kurse më shumë se 1,600 janë ende të pagjetur.

Rasti i fundit i ngritjes së një aktakuzë për krime lufte në Kosovë ishte më 03 qershor, 2022 kundër një të pandehuri me inicialet, Ç.J. i nacionalitetit serb.

Nga viti 2000 deri në vitin 2008 krimet e luftës në Kosovë janë hetuar nga Misioni i Organizatës së Kombeve të Bashkuara (UNMIK).

Since 2008, the European Union Rule of Law Mission (EULEX) has been responsible for investigating war crimes.

In 2018, the EULEX mission completed the process of submitting files to the prosecution and local courts.

These criminal cases are now in the hands of prosecutors and judges of Kosovo institutions./REL
