The Tennessee House of Representatives expels two Democratic lawmakers

In an extraordinary act of political revenge, Republicans expelled two Democratic lawmakers from the Tennessee Capitol building for their role in a protest calling for more gun control after a deadly shooting at a Nashville school.

The Republicans did not secure enough votes to expel the other Democratic lawmaker, Gloria Johnson.

The 72-25 vote to impeach Democratic lawmaker Justin Jones was an extraordinary move that the state's House of Representatives has used only a handful of times since the end of the American Civil War in 1865. In another vote, Republican lawmakers expelled him with Democratic lawmaker Justin Pearson also received a majority of votes.

The House of Representatives voted to expel the two Democratic lawmakers, a week after they, along with fellow Democrat Gloria Johnson, joined protesters in the building's hallways calling for more gun control during a gun debate.
