Blinken: We see opportunities for the normalization of Israel's relations
US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Saturday that there is "a tremendous opportunity" in the coming months for Israel to normalize ties with its Arab neighbors and also stressed the need for a Palestinian state.

The senior American diplomat said that real efforts are being made by Arab countries to revitalize the Palestinian Authority, so that it becomes more effective in representing the Palestinians.

"Almost every Arab country now wants to integrate Israel into the region to normalize relations...to offer commitments and guarantees so that Israel feels more secure," Mr. Blinken said at the annual Munich Security Conference.

"And also, I think it's more urgent than ever that we continue our efforts toward a Palestinian state that also guarantees Israel," he added.

President Biden's administration is committed to securing an agreement to normalize ties between Saudi Arabia and Israel.

Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries want the creation of a Palestinian state as part of the deal. Washington is also working to reach an agreement to secure the release of Israeli hostages kidnapped by Hamas on October 7.

The hostage deal and a humanitarian pause are seen as essential to help advance talks on a normalization deal between Saudi Arabia and Israel./ VOA
