Politologia Morina: Dialogue, an obstacle to EU integration
Morina Angelic Political Science

On the 16th anniversary of Kosovo's Independence in his Public Square Podcast, Ditmir Bushati talks with Engjellueshe Morina, political scientist at ECFR (European Council on Foreign Relations). Some of the most important topics that Bushati and Morina discussed during their conversation had to do with the challenges, achievements and difficulties that Kosovo and its people have gone through, but also cooperation and interaction with our strategic allies.

Speaking about Kosovo's journey in these 16 years, Bushati and Morina shared the opinion that a lot of progress has been made, but there are still many problems. According to the former Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, from the moment the dialogue started, we do not have a fair ratio between the number of recognitions and the dialogue process. Politologia adds that the dialogue with Serbia is an obstacle for the integration of Kosovo in the EU, since the countries of the union that still do not recognize the state of Kosovo, expect to have an agreement.

The two interlocutors also touched on international developments in the field of security, which have been particularly reflected in relations with Serbia at the expense of Kosovo.

"Personally, I thought that after the invasion of Ukraine by Vladimir Putin's Russia, on February 24, 2022, the EU would radically change its approach to the Western Balkans as well. So, it would close the still unfinished conflicts or citizenship issues in order to resist the aggression in the east of the continent. This thesis failed, despite the fact that we all thought we were living a new reality, because the EU concentrated on the east of the continent, somehow supporting the status-quo in our region," said Bushati.

While Morina says that in the geopolitical situation in which Europe and the Middle East find themselves, the question will have to be how much attention will Kosovo receive in the near future, if the security problem is not addressed and in fact worsens further? I, she continues, had not ruled it out.

As for relations with strategic allies, Morina emphasizes that, unfortunately, their approach in relation to Serbia has changed, seeing the latter as a state of strategic importance in the Western Balkans and as a partner state that had reduced Russia's influence in The Balkans, these premises, according to the political scientist, are very wrong.

According to her, the Kurti government has a different vision from the previous governments, being more persistent for the rights it claims, resisting pressures.

Morina added that Kosovo shows positive growth in some reports, especially in the norms of democracy, respect for human rights, and there is also economic growth, but "not enough for Kosovo to move forward"./ CNA
