A total of 19,939 people became Austrian citizens last year, showing a downward trend in naturalizations, as 3.2 percent fewer people obtained Austrian citizenship.

According to Statistics Austria, the number of naturalized citizens fell from 20,606 registered in 2022 to 19,939 – 40.3 percent of whom were people living abroad, reports  SchengenVisaInfo.com.

The results show that interest in becoming an Austrian citizen is waning, while the Austrian Statistics Authority also lays out the main reason for this result.

A total of 1,094 people residing in Austria obtained citizenship last year, representing an increase of 9.2 percent in this category, with the increase evident in all seven provinces.

More than three-quarters of all naturalizations in 2023 were based on a legal right, representing 15,304 people. Of these, 5,822 people were naturalized after at least six years of residence in Austria and meeting certain criteria such as protection with German language certificates and stable integration, birth in Austria, EEA citizenship or the right to asylum.

Also, 21 were politically persecuted, and 7,954 were descendants of politically persecuted and 670 were naturalized on the basis of marriage to an Austrian citizen. Another 430 received Austrian citizenship after staying in the country for more than 15 years./ CNA
