The dismissal of Secretary Mayorkas is expected to be rejected by the Democratic

Republicans in the US House of Representatives on Tuesday approved impeachment charges against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, holding him responsible for the record influx of illegal immigrants crossing the US-Mexico border. Hard-line Republicans have targeted Mr. Mayorkas for months over the issue. Mr Mayorkas can be impeached in the Senate where the Democrats have a majority and in all likelihood the charges will be dismissed.

"214 legislators voted in favor and 213 voted against, the resolution was approved", confirmed the raising of accusations for the dismissal of Secretary Mayorkas, Republican Mike Johnson, chairman of the House of Representatives.

The impeachment vote passed, although three Republicans joined Democrats in voting against it.

Hard-line Republicans have been targeting Mr. Mayorkas for months, but last week they failed by just one vote in their first attempt to bring the charges.

The vote on Tuesday was again close, but it still ended with impeachment charges against Secretary Mayorkas and the return of Republican Majority Leader Steve Scalise to Congress. He did not take part in last week's vote as he was receiving medical treatment.

Mr. Mayorkas is the second cabinet member in American history to be impeached. In 1876, the House of Representatives impeached Secretary of Defense William Belknap regarding government contracts. He resigned before the vote.

Last week Mr Mayorkas made it clear he would not resign if impeachment charges were brought against him.

After the vote in the House of Representatives, the charges will be sent to the Senate.

The Democrats have the upper hand in the Senate, they control 51 seats and the Republicans have 49.

Democrats are unlikely to support Mr. Mayorkas' removal from office.

The issue of immigration is likely to be a major issue in the presidential race in November, where President Biden and former President Trump appear to face each other again./ VOA
