Opposition leader Navalny dies in prison

Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny has died in prison, a statement issued by a local department of the Federal Prison Service said.

This statement, published on February 16, could not be independently verified.
Russian state-controlled media also cited the statement, reporting that Navalny, 47, had died.

State media, TASS, quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying that Russian President Vladimir Putin had been briefed on reports of Navalny's death and that he had no information on the cause of his death.

The Federal Prison Service said in a statement that Navalny felt ill after the walk on February 16 and then lost consciousness.

An ambulance attended to treat him, but he died, the statement said.

Navalny's press secretary, Kira Yarmysh, wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, that the Kremlin critic's team had no confirmation of his death.

"Federal Prison Service in Yamalo-Nenets region is spreading news about the death of Alexei Navalny in prison IK-3. We still do not have confirmation of this news. Navalny's lawyer will go there and as soon as we have information, we will we announce", she wrote./REL
