Ukraine peace talks: Trump and Zelensky meet in Florida today

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will meet with US President Donald Trump in Florida today for the latest round of talks aimed at ending nearly four years of war with Russia.

Their meeting at the US president's Mar-a-Lago home comes after intense Russian bombing of Kiev over the weekend, which Zelensky said is evidence that Moscow does not want peace.

On Friday night, a 10-hour barrage of missiles and drones targeting the Ukrainian capital killed two people and left 32 others injured, local authorities said.

At the Florida meeting, Zelensky is expected to raise the issue of security guarantees and territorial concessions for Ukraine, both issues on which Russia has previously been unwilling to compromise.

They will also discuss the new 20-point peace plan, a revised version of a previous 28-point plan drafted by US special envoy Steve Witkoff, which was widely seen as too favorable to Russia.

Control of Ukraine's eastern Donbas has been a major sticking point until now, but Zelensky has now said a free economic zone could be a possibility. Moscow currently controls about 75% of the Donetsk region and about 99% of neighboring Luhansk. The regions are collectively known as Donbas.

The Kremlin has not commented on Zelensky's offer to withdraw troops from the eastern Donbas region if Russia also withdraws.

The Ukrainian president has expressed optimism about the new draft peace plan, calling it a fundamental document for ending the war. On Friday, he told reporters that it was 90% complete:

"Our task is to make sure that everything is 100% ready ," Zelensky said.

But in an interview with Politico, Trump warned that nothing is set until he personally approves it. Trump added that he expected to see the new draft on Sunday.

After meetings with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Zelensky stressed again that Moscow's recent attack on Kiev was Russia's response to our efforts for peace and this really shows that Putin does not want peace. /CNA
