President Joe Biden said Monday that the United States is seeking a six-week pause in fighting between Israel and Hamas in Gaza as a step toward a longer-term ceasefire.

Mr. Biden and Jordan's King Abdullah spoke to the media after the two allies held talks at the White House that touched on a number of issues, including an expected Israeli ground offensive in southern Gaza and the risk of a humanitarian disaster among Palestinian civilians.

President Biden, who has shown growing displeasure with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the Gaza offensive, said the United States is working with allies in the region on a cease-fire agreement to allow the release of Gazan hostages and the flow of increase in humanitarian aid.

The agreement would provide for a pause in fighting of at least six weeks, "during which we can work to build something more stable," Mr. Biden said.

King Abdullah reiterated the call for a broad ceasefire.

"We cannot allow this to continue," he said. "We need a lasting ceasefire now. This war must end."

President Biden has stepped up calls for Israel not to launch a ground offensive in the southern Gaza city of Rafah without a plan to protect Palestinian civilians.

Mr. Biden spoke with Prime Minister Netanyahu on Sunday and the White House said he emphasized that "there should be no military operation in Rafah without a credible and workable plan to ensure safety and support for the more than one million displaced people there".

Mr Biden's team has been trying to negotiate a pause in the fighting to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas since the Palestinian militant group that rules Gaza launched an attack on southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,200 people. Gaza's Hamas-controlled health ministry says more than 28,000 people have been killed in Gaza in Israel's offensive against Hamas fighters./Voice of America
