Biden will meet with the King of Jordan

United States President Joe Biden will meet Monday at the White House with Jordan's King Abdullah II, who has been vocal in his calls for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

They are also expected to discuss the ongoing efforts to free the hostages being held in Gaza and the major concerns about an Israeli military offensive in the border town of Rafah.

It will also be the first meeting between the two allies since three American soldiers were killed in a drone attack on a US base in Jordan last month. Biden has blamed Iran-backed militias for this deadly attack.

Biden and his allies are working to broker another break in Israel's war against Hamas so that aid can be sent to Gaza and the hostages released. The White House is facing criticism from Arab-Americans for its continued support for Israel in the face of the rising death toll in Gaza.

A ceasefire agreement appears to be close. A senior U.S. administration official said Sunday that a deal to release hostages being held by Hamas in Gaza in exchange for a cease-fire has cleared the way, according to the Associated Press.

King Abdullah, who has been vocal in his calls for an end to Israel's war, is expected to ask Biden to support an immediate ceasefire.

Israel launched the war in the Gaza Strip after about 1,200 people were killed in southern Israel on October 7 by members of Hamas, who also kidnapped 253 people. A number of those hostages were later released.

On Monday, the Hamas-led Gaza Health Ministry said 164 people were killed and around 200 wounded in Gaza in the last day alone, although it is not clear how many died in Israeli bombardment overnight. .

This Minister says that 28,340 Palestinians have been killed and nearly 68,000 others have been injured in Gaza by Israeli attacks since October 7./ REL
